The New South Wales (NSW) government announced on Wednesday that it is taking steps to sever ties with the Construction, Forestry and Maritime Employees Union (CFMEU) Construction and General Division due to serious allegations involving the union’s state secretary. This decision follows shocking reports that CFMEU NSW Secretary Darren Greenfield was caught on hidden camera receiving a bundle of 5,000 Australian dollars (approximately $3,369) in what is believed to be a kickback arrangement.
Major media outlets highlighted that the footage was recorded during a joint operation by NSW Police and the Australian Federal Police. Greenfield has been charged with corruption offenses as of September 2021, but he has yet to resign from his position, and his case is still pending before a jury.
The NSW government expressed strong disapproval, stating the revelations are appalling. There is zero tolerance for criminal or corrupt behavior in the building industry, unions, or anywhere else. They emphasized that the CFMEU Construction and General Division cannot reform itself.
In response to these developments, the NSW government has contacted the Labor Party’s General Secretary to call for an immediate suspension of the union’s affiliation and halt any donations or fees. Additionally, they will request a review of Enterprise Bargaining Agreements involving the CFMEU and work with federal bodies to address any related allegations.
