Global PC shipments increased by 3.1% in the second quarter of this year, reaching 62.5 million units. This marks the second consecutive quarter of growth compared to the same period last year, according to a report released on Tuesday.

The rise in interest around AI PCs is becoming a significant trend in the industry. Laptops featuring Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X platform have sparked the initial wave of the AI laptop boom, as noted by Counterpoint Research. Anticipation for AMD’s Ryzen AI 300 and Intel’s Lunar Lake processors, set to launch in the second half of Q3 2024, is expected to further boost the appeal of AI PCs.

In terms of market share for Q2 2024, HP led with 21%, followed by Dell at 16%. Apple, on the other hand, had a more modest 8.5% market share during the same period. Looking ahead, the report suggests that AI laptops will significantly grow the AI PC market in the latter half of 2024, especially with the rise of Windows on Arm AI devices. Senior analyst William Li emphasized that this period will be crucial for AI PCs, with manufacturers preparing for the widespread adoption of this new technology. However, due to their higher price tags, demand from businesses is expected to outpace that of everyday consumers, although rapid adoption may take time in the first year.
