Sri Lanka and the United States have agreed to boost cooperation on maritime security to ensure a safe maritime environment in the Indian Ocean, particularly through initiatives during Sri Lanka’s chairmanship of the Indian Ocean Rim Association (IORA). This commitment was reaffirmed during the 5th Sri Lanka–USA Partnership Dialogue held in Washington on July 12, as reported by Sri Lanka’s Foreign Ministry.
The dialogue was co-chaired by John Bass, Acting Under Secretary for Political Affairs at the US Department of State, and Sri Lankan Foreign Secretary Aruni Wijewardane. In a joint statement, both nations expressed their dedication to economic growth, security collaboration, sustainable development, democracy, human rights, and exchanges between their peoples.
The US acknowledged signs of economic recovery in Sri Lanka and praised the country’s commitment to the IMF program and reforms, which are vital for financial stability and future growth. Sri Lanka expressed gratitude for over $250 million in US economic aid during its recent crisis. The US is also backing Sri Lanka’s efforts in debt restructuring and governance reforms to foster sustainable development.
Additionally, Sri Lanka welcomed the upcoming arrival of a fourth High Endurance US Coast Guard Cutter and a King Air aircraft, which will enhance maritime awareness and assist in humanitarian responses, valued at $30.18 million. The US has also committed to exploring ways to support Sri Lanka in hydrographic mapping and personnel training in this area. The US delegation included senior officials from various departments, emphasizing the depth of the partnership.
