VTU to confer honorary doctorate on ISRO chief, two others

Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU) will award Doctor of Science (DSc) honorary doctorate degrees to three notable figures during its 24th annual convocation scheduled for Thursday. ISRO Chairman S Somanath, Hari K Marar (Managing Director of Bengaluru International Airport Ltd), and Sadguru Sri Madhusudan Sai (founder of Sri Madhusudan Sai Institute of Medical Sciences and Research, Chikkaballapur) will receive these honors.

VTU Vice-Chancellor Prof S Vidyashankar briefed the media at the Jnana Sangama campus regarding the upcoming event. He stated that the convocation will see the awarding of BE degrees to a total of 51,083 students, including 15,387 from autonomous colleges. Additionally, degrees will be conferred upon 45 BTech, eight B.Plan, and 1,138 B.Arch students (including 169 from autonomous colleges). Furthermore, 339 PhD and one MSc degrees will be conferred.

Governor Thaawar Chand Gehlot will preside over the convocation, with Prof Govindan Rangarajan, Director of the Indian Institute of Science (IISC), Bengaluru, serving as the chief guest for the convocation address. Pro-chancellor and Higher Education Minister MC Sudhakar will also attend the event.

The university has split the annual convocation into two parts since the last academic year for the convenience of graduating students. The first part, focused on undergraduate students, will take place now, while the second part for postgraduate students will be held in March.
