Population Puts Pressure On Natural Resources

Must read

Mangaluru

District Health Officer (DHO) HR Thimmaiah   stated that the increase in India’s population is exerting significant pressure on the country’s natural resources, leading to landslides and other natural calamities. He made these remarks during the World Population Day programme, which was organized under the auspices of the Dakshina Kannada district administration in association with   Health and Family Welfare department and Karnataka Polytechnic (KPT).
He mentioned that while natural resources are limited, forests and mountains are rapidly disappearing to accommodate the growing demand for housing.  Pressure on natural resources eventually results in ecological imbalance. We have been witnessing landslides in the last few years. Meanwhile, the course of rivers is also changing. As a result of population growth, the number of multi-storied buildings is increasing, he said. Furthermore, expressing concern over the conversion of agricultural lands into residential and commercial areas, the DHO stated that such developments would directly impact food production.  Taluk Panchayat Executive Officer   Mahesh Holla said the increase in population has adversely affected the environment, with several human activities leading to environmental destruction.
