The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has embarked on a initiative to elevate the city’s cleanliness standards, aiming for a top spot in the Swachh Survey rankings. Focusing on City’s persistent garbage issue, BBMP has intensified efforts to clean not only main roads but also footpaths, narrow lanes, and sidewalks.
Currently, mechanized garbage sweepers are deployed solely on major thoroughfares, while civic workers handle the cleaning of other areas. Acknowledging the inadequate maintenance of footpaths and narrow lanes, BBMP has formulated plans to enhance cleaning operations in these crucial zones.
To achieve this, BBMP has invited tenders from qualified firms to supply Walk behind Multi-Function Sweeper cum Litter Picker Machines in EV mode. These machines are specifically designed for sweeping footpaths, narrow lanes, and sidewalks with water. The tender mandates that the machines, equipped for pavements and narrow lanes, should be supplied along with necessary labor and maintained for one year, covering all operational and repair costs.
The procurement of 25 mechanized garbage sweepers operating nightly on high-density corridor roads has already begun, aimed at reducing dust and garbage accumulation, stated BBMP officials. However, challenges persist in maintaining cleanliness in the city’s central areas, necessitating the introduction of compact sweepers under contractual arrangements.
The surge in dust levels, exacerbated by ongoing metro construction, white topping projects, flyover constructions, and road repairs, has significantly impacted public health. Dust accumulation on roadsides and footpaths has led to increased respiratory issues among residents, highlighting the urgency of effective cleanliness measures.
