Russian Ambassador Georgy Zinoviev expressed Russia’s commitment to maintaining stable bilateral relations with South Korea and striving for improvement despite current tensions. Speaking at a Seoul event commemorating the shared history between the two nations, Zinoviev highlighted Russia’s longstanding support for Korea’s autonomy and independence since the establishment of diplomatic relations.
Russia has consistently acted in Korea’s interests and continues to defend them, Zinoviev stated during the opening of an exhibition marking the 140th anniversary of the first bilateral treaty. He mentioned Russia’s constructive role as a neighbor and its genuine interest in Korea’s sovereignty.
The ambassador’s remarks come amid strained relations between Seoul and Moscow, exacerbated by Russia’s closer ties with North Korea, particularly in military cooperation following President Vladimir Putin’s visit to Pyongyang. Despite these challenges, Zinoviev remains optimistic about fostering positive momentum in bilateral relations.
