A team from the Progressive Rivers Authority (PRAVAH) recently inspected the Mahadayi basin at Kanakumbi following allegations by Goa against Karnataka. The team, consisting of eight members, visited various sites including Chorla Ghat and Haratala Canal, and met with state irrigation officers at Kanakumbi guest house in Khanapur taluk. Discussions included the Kalasa-Banduri project, supported by maps provided by officials.
The visit comes after Goa’s Chief Minister accused Karnataka of initiating Mahadayi works without necessary permissions. However, Karnataka’s Irrigation Corporation Managing Director, Rajesh Amminabhavi, clarified that the team’s visit was merely for inspection and not decision-making. The central team, formed at Goa’s insistence to address flood concerns, was greeted by local authorities upon their arrival at the Chorla border.
The inspection aimed to verify the status of ongoing projects in the basin. Karnataka officials informed the central team that work had not commenced, countering Goa’s claims. The visit follows a series of exchanges between the two states regarding water management in the Mahadayi river basin.
