In a dominant performance at the T20 World Cup, the West Indies crushed Uganda at the Providence Stadium, setting multiple records in the process. Akeal Hosein’s spectacular bowling in the first seven overs secured him a five-wicket haul, with all five dismissals either bowled or LBW. Hosein finished with figures of 5/11, setting a new record for the best bowling performance by a West Indian in the T20 World Cup, surpassing Samuel Badree’s 4/15 against Bangladesh in 2014.
Hosein now holds the second-best bowling figures for the West Indies in T20 cricket, trailing only Obed McCoy’s 6/17 against India in 2022. Keemo Paul ranks third with his 5/15 against Bangladesh in 2018. Hosein’s exceptional spin bowling, supported by his teammates, limited Uganda to just 39 runs in 12 overs, tying the lowest score in the tournament’s history, matching the Netherlands’ total against Sri Lanka in 2014.
In their innings, the West Indies posted 173/5, thanks to a late surge from Andre Russell, who hit four boundaries in the final over to reach 30* and achieve a career T20I milestone of 1,000 runs. Uganda struggled with the target, ultimately losing by 134 runs, the second-largest margin of victory in T20 World Cup history, second only to Sri Lanka’s 172-run win over Kenya in 2007.
This victory marked the West Indies’ sixth consecutive T20I win, putting them one match away from their record streak of seven wins. The team will face New Zealand next at the Brian Lara Cricket Academy in Trinidad and Tobago.
