Sporadic Incidents Of Violence Mar Final Phase Of Voting In Bengal

Sporadic violence marred the seventh and final phase of Lok Sabha polls in nine West Bengal constituencies, with clashes between TMC, ISF, and BJP workers in Jadavpur and Diamond Harbour. Despite claims of peaceful voting, the Election Commission received 1,450 complaints by 11 am about EVM malfunctions and polling agents being barred from booths.

Clashes occurred over blocked polling agents, with crude bombs reportedly thrown in Bhangar, Jadavpur. Police intervened, using lathicharges and recovering crude bombs. In Kultuli, Joynagar, voters dumped EVMs and VVPAT machines into water bodies, alleging misconduct. New EVMs were provided.

BJP leader Amit Malviya criticized TMC for alleged violence and intimidation, highlighting issues in Diamond Harbour where TMC’s Abhishek Banerjee is contesting. TMC supporters accused ISF of instigating violence. An ISF worker’s vehicle was vandalized in Baghajatin, allegedly by TMC supporters.

Clashes between TMC and BJP workers in Diamond Harbour led to accusations of malpractice and intimidation. CPI(M) and BJP workers were reportedly targeted by TMC supporters. The state Congress unit requested the CEO to address alleged irregularities. Police reported injuries and arrests, ensuring voting continued.
