City Transitions To Zero-Waste Campuses With Swachha Belaku Initiative

Must read

In a significant step towards sustainability, all police stations in Bengaluru will soon be transformed into zero-waste campuses as part of the Swachha Belaku initiative. This campaign aims to implement efficient waste management systems across divisional police stations. Deputy Commissioner of Police, K Santosh Babu, IPS, has expressed full support for the initiative, ensuring necessary infrastructure and contacts for its success.

Under this initiative, single-use items will be strictly prohibited within police offices, fostering an eco-friendly environment. Swachha Belaku has previously raised awareness at the RK Hegdenagar police quarters and plans to implement sustainable waste management systems across government and private schools, offices, and research institutes in the Yelahanka area.

The initiative, supported by Social Venture Partners India and implemented by Vedan Trust, focuses on minimizing waste generation, segregating refuse, and exploring reuse and recycling opportunities. Padmashree Balaram, Lead of Swachha Belaku, highlighted efforts to instill sustainable practices in schools and generate funds through waste segregation. The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike is fully supporting the programme.

Over 10 government schools will kick off awareness programs during the vacation period, starting on June 15. This transformation of police stations into zero-waste campuses sets a precedent for other institutions to follow. Naeem Momin, KAS, Joint Commissioner of the Yelahanka Zone, BBMP, noted efforts to assist educational institutions in waste management, leading to the declaration of Newton Public School as the first Zero Waste Campus in the Yelahanka zone.
