European tariffs imposed on Chinese products must be carefully considered to avoid negative consequences for Germany, Economy Minister Robert Habeck stated. He emphasized the importance of ensuring that such measures benefit more than they harm. Habeck highlighted the need for a targeted approach and reassessed Europe’s relationship with China. According to him, the trade dynamics have evolved, requiring policies that will yield medium and long-term benefits.
Tensions over Chinese exports have intensified, with accusations from both Washington and Europe regarding Beijing’s support for sectors like green technologies through substantial state subsidies. They allege that China intentionally creates overcapacity and then sells goods at artificially low prices, harming local businesses.
Recently, the US announced a tariff increase on Chinese electric vehicles to 100 percent. The EU is also investigating China’s impact on the electric car market. A decision on imposing punitive tariffs is pending.
