Bengaluru witnessed the uprooting of 219 trees within a mere four-day span. Representatives from the BBMP forest department disclosed that 28 teams have been deployed in shifts to address the aftermath, focusing on the clearance of fallen trees. The city’s footpaths and roads have been cluttered with tree branches and logs, posing challenges for pedestrians.
BBMP East Zone Range Forest Officer Thimmappa mentionedthe primary objective of ensuring unimpeded traffic flow by promptly clearing uprooted trees. Thimmappa noted that although significant progress has been made, there remain areas where fallen trees and branches obstruct footpaths and roadways. Trucks have been mobilized to transport the debris to designated depots in each zone, with plans to auction the timber for optimal returns.
Furthermore, officials underscored the predominance of softwood trees in the city, unsuitable for timber purposes but viable as firewood. The uprooted trees primarily belong to species such as Gulmohar, Spathodia, and Peltophorum. Notably, regions like RR Nagar West, South, and East have witnessed a substantial number of casualties among old trees due to the relentless rain and strong winds.
Reiterating the BBMP’s commitment to restoring normalcy, a senior official from the forest division affirmed the deployment of 28 teams across the city for tree and branch clearance operations. Additionally, residents have been urged to report vulnerable trees and branches to the authorities for prompt action, with pruning initiatives slated for prioritized implementation.
