Mangaluru

Mangaluru International Airport, continuing its commitment to ensuring the safety of aircraft operations, took a significant step in this direction on April 26. The airport leadership team conducted the groundbreaking ceremony for the installation of the Precision Approach Lighting (PAL) category 1 system near Sri Kordabbu Daivasthana, Unile. This marked the initiation of the project, during which various tasks related to PAL will be completed, leading to the commissioning of the system. The airport has undertaken this project in accordance with safety recommendations from the Ministry of Civil Aviation and the Civil Aviation Safety and Security Regulator. The system is expected to be operational within 20 months. The PAL CAT 1 system offers improved visibility of runway 24 to pilots and provides guidance for their final landing approach. It will be installed 900 meters from the threshold of runway 24, as 90% of aircraft landings at the airport occur at this end. Around 18 lattice structures will support the lights. A unique feature of the project is that the precision approach lights, affixed to frangible T-shaped structures, will be mounted on lattice structures—a rarity in the global aviation sector. This project will complement the installation of runway centerline lights, the work on which is completed and awaiting approval from the Director-General of Civil Aviation for commissioning.

The airport is committed to passenger safety and aircraft operation, aligning with its Vision 2025 to become the safest tabletop airport in India, as stated by the airport spokesperson.
