Must read

In the initial three months of 2024, Bengaluru has seen a spike in road accidents, with a total of 1,280 incidents reported. Tragically, these accidents have resulted in the loss of 243 lives, while 1,082 individuals have sustained injuries.

Data analysis further reveals that within the city, there were 240 fatal accidents and 1,040 non-fatal incidents. Chetan Sodaye, Senior Programme Associate at Integrated Transport & Road Safety, highlighted that over 70% of road accidents in Bengaluru involve vulnerable road users such as pedestrians, cyclists, and motorcyclists.

Highlighting the need for safer infrastructure for these users, Sodaye stressed the importance of incorporating simple street design elements to enhance safety without disrupting traffic flow. He stated, “Well-designed speed humps and raised pedestrian crossings can ensure pedestrian safety without impeding traffic movement. Inadequate pedestrian infrastructure not only leads to conflicts but also poses safety risks and reduces traffic efficiency. Designing infrastructure with pedestrians in mind is crucial for improving road safety and traffic flow.”

Additionally, DCP South Traffic, Shiva Prakash Devaraju, pointed out that a significant number of accidents in the south division involved individuals driving under the influence of alcohol. He noted that about 80% of pedestrian fatalities occurred during night and early morning hours, often due to non-compliance with traffic rules and lane disciplines.

According to data provided by the Bengaluru traffic police, the city witnessed a staggering 23 lakh traffic violations, including cases of reckless driving, speeding, drunken driving, and traffic signal violations.
