An official announced on Sunday that six students from Afghanistan and one from East Africa have been instructed to leave their rooms at Gujarat University’s hostel due to overstaying. This decision follows weeks after some foreign students were attacked for praying on the premises.
Following the March 16 attack, delegations from Afghanistan and Gambia visited the University to discuss safety measures with the vice-chancellor.
Neerja Gupta, the University’s vice-chancellor, informed sources that the seven students were asked to vacate their hostel rooms as they had completed their studies and were staying due to pending administrative matters. The University has facilitated their return to their home countries by completing the necessary paperwork and coordinating with their respective consulates.
Gupta emphasized that the University aims to maintain the hostel for current students only and has informed the consulates about the students’ departure.
Gujarat University hosts over 300 international students. The attack on March 16 involved about two dozen individuals who assaulted foreign students for praying during Ramzan. Two students from Sri Lanka and Tajikistan were hospitalized due to the attack.
