New Delhi

Hassan district is facing an imminent threat of severe drought as the Hemavati reservoir levels dwindle. Dr Mrutyunjay Mohapatra, director general of the India Meteorological Department (IMD), disclosed that IMD has initiated the utilization of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning in weather forecasting, with plans for further expansion in the coming years.

Speaking to sources, Mohapatra revealed the formation of a dedicated expert team within IMD and the Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES) to lead the development of this AI-based tool. Collaborations have been established with esteemed institutions such as the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) and Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIITs) to leverage their expertise in AI and machine learning.

IMD is actively engaged in the development of AI-based tools for weather forecasting, with a team of experts assembled within IMD and MoES for this purpose. The initiative aims to enhance forecasting methods, offering more precise and timely weather forecasts for the nation, as stated by experts.

AI and machine learning offer significant advantages in weather forecasting by efficiently processing vast volumes of historical weather data and real-time observations. By identifying patterns and correlations within this data, predictive models can be developed to forecast weather phenomena with greater accuracy, including cyclones, monsoons, and other extreme weather events, experts emphasized.
