BMCRI Doctors Concerned as 47 Hostel Residents Fall Ill

Must read

Doctors at the Bangalore Medical College Research Institute (BMCRI) are alarmed after 47 doctors residing in the girls’ hostel were hospitalized due to symptoms of diarrhea and dehydration, sparking fears of a potential cholera outbreak.

Ramesh Krishna K, Dean and Director of BMCRI, confirmed the situation, stating that the hospitalized residents are being treated at Victoria Hospital. Among them, 28 are receiving care at the Trauma Care Centre, 13 in H Block, and three are under observation in the ICU. All patients presented with loose stools and dehydration, diagnosed with acute gastroenteritis. Their condition is stable, with ongoing treatment comprising antibiotics and IV fluids, pending investigation reports.

Speaking anonymously, several PG doctors expressed concern over the poor sanitary conditions in the hostel, attributing the outbreak to negligence by the college management. They cited issues with drinking water purifiers emitting foul odors, poorly maintained toilets, and dysfunctional flushes, leading to urinary tract infections among residents. Despite repeated complaints, no action was taken by the authorities.

The doctors shared images depicting the dismal state of the hostel facilities, highlighting the irony of medical professionals trained to combat outbreaks becoming patients themselves.

Commissioner of Health and Family Welfare, Randeep D, cautioned against prematurely labeling the situation as a cholera outbreak, pending test results. BBMP health officers are set to inspect the premises and implement necessary measures in response.
