Foreign Minister S Jaishankar expressed confidence on Tuesday about India eventually becoming a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), stating that it’s inevitable but requires increased efforts. Speaking to intellectuals in Rajkot, Gujarat, he stressed the importance of hard work in achieving this goal.
Jaishankar acknowledged the current dominance of five nations as the original permanent members of the UN, but noted a growing international momentum favoring India’s bid for a permanent seat. He highlighted the historical context of the UNSC’s formation and the need for change given the evolving global landscape.
While collaborative proposals involving India, Japan, Germany, and Egypt have been submitted to the UN, Jaishankar emphasized the necessity of persistent effort, especially in light of recent conflicts like the Ukraine war and Gaza, which underscored the UN’s perceived weakening.
He praised India’s democratic achievements and economic resilience during the pandemic, emphasizing its potential as a global growth engine. Jaishankar highlighted India’s progress in various sectors and its recognized role as a contributor to global problem-solving efforts.
Regarding the sensitive case of baby girl Ariha Shah’s custody in Germany, Jaishankar assured ongoing efforts to find solutions, expressing dissatisfaction with the current arrangements and reaffirming India’s commitment to the child’s welfare and cultural upbringing.
