The renovated swimming pool at the Hubli-Dharwad Municipal Corporation (HDMC) is becoming a popular spot as temperatures rise in the twin cities. Despite the Smart City project’s upgrades, including amenities like toilets, showers, and a baby pool, there is a shortage of in-house coaches. Currently, only proficient swimmers are using the pool, leaving beginners without guidance.
In February, the pool was visited by 1,802 people, and from March until now, 1,645 people have visited. The numbers are expected to rise further in April and May. This is the sole swimming pool in North Karnataka with a 50M diving facility, suitable for hosting diving competitions and water polo matches. However, the absence of qualified coaches, especially diving coaches, is a challenge for professionals.Suresh Mugali, a resident, highlighted the lack of professional trainers for children, urging the corporation to organize a summer camp. Fakkirappa Ingalali, Zonal Assistant Commissioner for Zone-8, mentioned that daily visitors to the pool are increasing, and plans are underway to call for tenders for maintenance. Efforts are being made to ensure cleanliness and water purification at the pool premises.
