A gathering of over 100 nature enthusiasts convened at Freedom Park on Sunday to express solidarity with Sonam Wangchuk, an innovator and education reformist, who is currently observing his 19th day of fasting to raise awareness about the ecological damage inflicted upon the Himalayan region due to industrialization.
The gathering, marked by placards bearing various slogans, commenced with heartfelt Ladakhi prayers sung by students from Ladakh studying in Bengaluru.
Pradeep, a staunch supporter of the cause, traveled a distance of 100 kilometers to demonstrate his solidarity. Participants engaged in discussions concerning Ladakh’s urgent need for inclusion under the 6th schedule, along with deliberations on climate change and biodiversity.
Renowned activist Sandeep Anirudhan, founder of Conscious Communities, and environmentalist DT Devare, trustee of Bangalore Environment Trust, shared valuable insights with the attendees. They emphasized the critical roles of both individuals and governments in safeguarding the planet’s future.
Sandeep highlighted the resonance between advocating for the 6th Schedule and Gandhiji’s vision of Swaraj outlined in Hind Swaraj. This resonance is further reinforced by constitutional provisions such as the 73rd and 74th Amendments, the Forest Rights Act, and the 6th Schedule, underscoring the importance of collective action in addressing ecological challenges.
