Namma Metro, cognizant of Bengaluru’s water scarcity crisis, has taken a significant step towards water conservation by inviting tenders for rainwater harvesting. Despite a decade of metro construction, the full-scale implementation of rainwater harvesting has yet to materialize.
With a current operational span of 74 kilometers encompassing 65 stations, Namma Metro has only installed rainwater harvesting systems at select stations. However, recognizing the urgency of the situation, Namma Metro has allocated Rs 65 lakh for the implementation of rainwater harvesting initiatives along the purple and green lines. Tenders have been issued for this purpose.
The initiative aims to harness rainwater to augment groundwater levels across the city, utilizing the expansive network of metro lines. Each metro station will allocate approximately one acre of land for rainwater harvesting infrastructure. Experts highlight the untapped potential for rainwater storage along not just stations but also viaducts within the metro system, further enhancing water conservation efforts in Bengaluru.
