After several delays and cancelled projects, director Lokesh Kanagaraj is gearing up to start Kaithi 2, the sequel to his 2019 blockbuster Kaithi, with actor Karthi returning in the lead role.
Sources reveal that Kanagaraj has already started working on the script and solved the earlier creative issues. Karthi has reportedly given his dates for the film, bringing relief to fans waiting for an official announcement.
The decision comes after a mixed phase in Kanagaraj’s career. Though his film Coolie, starring superstar Rajinikanth, earned over ₹600 crore worldwide, it faced criticism for weak writing and direction. Before its release, Kanagaraj had received major offers from stars like Ram Charan, Prabhas, and Aamir Khan. However, the film’s uneven reviews slowed down his momentum.
Plans for a massive multi-starrer featuring Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan under his direction were also dropped, with Nelson Dilipkumar now said to be in talks for that project. Another proposed film with Rajinikanth also didn’t move forward.
With no other big projects confirmed, Lokesh has decided to return to the story that first made him famous. Kaithi, released in 2019, won praise for its gripping action and storytelling. Expectations are high for Kaithi 2, as fans hope it will mark Kanagaraj’s strong comeback.
