Railway connectivity was provided to Dandeli in Uttara Kannada district four years ago. The daily train was suspended during the Covid-19 lockdown. But covid is over and life has started as usual. Even so, people are struggling without the resumption of train services.
Dandeli, on the banks of the Kali river, has grown in tourism to a great extent. In 2019, train service was started up to Ambewadi in Dandeli in order to help the tourists arriving to Dandeli from Dharwad route and the public of Dandeli area going to different places including Bangalore for work. Union Minister Prahlad Joshi and Suresh Angadi inaugurated the railway line from Alnavar in Dharwad to Ambewadi in Dandeli. But the train stopped after just two months. It has not started since then.
Akram Khan, a local, said, train service should be restarted till Dharwad. Bangalore train should be extended till Dandeli.
The district had a railway connection to Dandeli even before independence. After it stopped, railway connection was again provided to Dandeli as a result of many years of struggle. After this it stopped again due to covid. It is a public complaint that no one is responding despite many requests to restart the railway service.
