North Korea Launches Cruise Missiles From East Coast Amid Rising Tensions

Seoul

In the midst of escalating tensions, North Korea fired several cruise missiles from its east coast on Sunday, just days after test-firing new strategic cruise missiles from the west coast, according to South Korean military sources. The Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) reported that the launch occurred around 8 a.m. in waters off Shinpo Port. While the JCS did not provide detailed information, citing ongoing analysis, they emphasized that the military is closely coordinating with the U.S. to monitor any further signs of North Korea’s provocations. Experts suggest that the Pulhwasal-3-31, the type of cruise missile fired, may be nuclear-capable. The numbering in its name matches that of the Hwasan-31, a tactical nuclear warhead unveiled by North Korea in March 2023. Previous tests involved the Hwasal-1 and -2 cruise missiles, presumed to be capable of carrying tactical nuclear weapons. While the launch of a cruise missile does not directly violate UN Security Council resolutions on ballistic missile technology, it raises concerns about the potential threat to South Korea’s security, especially if nuclear warheads can be mounted on such missiles. North Korea has been increasing tensions on the Korean Peninsula through various weapons tests and harsh rhetoric, coinciding with the election year for South Korea and the United States. Recent activities include the launch of a solid-fuel hypersonic missile on January 14 and the claimed test of an underwater nuclear attack drone in protest of joint military drills among South Korea, the U.S., and Japan earlier this month. The situation remains closely monitored, and diplomatic efforts are underway to address the growing concerns in the region.
