In a proactive move to ensure the safety of schoolchildren, the city’s traffic police launched a raid targeting school bus drivers operating under the influence of alcohol. Responding to multiple complaints, the police took action against 16 drivers found to be driving under the influence during working hours. The traffic police have recommended the suspension of their driving licenses to the transport department. The operation, conducted from 7 am to 9:30 am, involved stopping 3,414 school vehicles at various locations across the city. Drivers were subjected to breathalyzer tests to detect alcohol consumption. The crackdown aims to address concerns about the negligent behavior of some school bus drivers, who not only endanger the lives of children but also pose risks to other motorists. MN Anucheth, Joint Commissioner of Police, Traffic Department, stated, A criminal case has been registered against the 16 drivers found driving under the influence of alcohol, and their driving licenses have been recommended for suspension. We have also reached out to the concerned school board to gather information about drivers involved in such violations. Additionally, if schools are using private vehicles for transportation, this will be reported to the transport department. The traffic police’s swift action underscores the commitment to maintaining road safety, particularly when it comes to the responsible transportation of schoolchildren. The recommendation for license suspension sends a strong message about the consequences of jeopardizing the safety of passengers, especially vulnerable children commuting to and from school.
