Mangaluru
It is common for teachers in schools to celebrate their work by holding a farewell ceremony when they retire. But here, the alumni pay Rs 2 lakh to a retired teacher. They surprised everyone by gifting him a gold chain.
Darul Islam Aided Higher Primary School at Akkarangadi in Pane Mangaluru in Bantwal taluk of Dakshina Kannada district witnessed this rare incident. Jayalakshmi R Bhat, a teacher here, received this rare gift from the students.
Jayalakshmi had been working as a teacher for the past three decades. At the time of her retirement, the teacher was paid around Rs 2,10,000 by all the alumni. She was gifted a gold chain weighing 33 grams.
The alumni had planned to give a gift to their favourite teacher who had retired from the school. After discussing the matter in a WhatsApp group, they finally decided to gift a gold chain. A group of alumni, who had kept the issue of gifting a gold chain a secret, gifted a gold chain in a surprise way while felicitating the teacher on the school’s anniversary.
Speaking about the same, Jayalakshmi R Bhat said, it is enough to have the love of children. There was no need for this gift. I didn’t even want to be honoured. They have given such a gift to be remembered forever. I am happy that they have received a valuable education, he said.
Kabir, an alumnus, said, earlier, we had gifted a car to a teacher from the alumni association. We decided to give this gift to our teacher in memory of the school and did this. The alumni who studied here are in different jobs. The gold chain was made with the money they gave me, he said.
