Mangaluru
The Jayashreekrishna Parisara Premi organization is urging authorities to consider renaming Mangaluru International Airport after the late former union minister, George Fernandes. Founder of the Samithi Thonse, Jayashreekrishna Shetty, emphasized George Fernandes’s significant contributions to the development of Tulunadu and his central role in state and national politics during a press conference in Udupi. Shetty highlighted Fernandes’s key role in projects such as Konkan Railways, upgrading the Mangaluru to Bengaluru train route tracks to broad gauge, and facilitating night landing facilities at Mangaluru International Airport. Shetty expressed that renaming the airport after George Fernandes has been a longstanding demand from their organization. He noted that despite positive responses from Union Minister Rajnath Singh, Home Minister Amit Shah, and Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, the initiative needs support from local MLAs and MPs. George Fernandes’s visionary approach and dedication to implementing critical projects, including the Sea Bird project in Karwar, make him a fitting candidate for this honor, according to Shetty. The organization aims to honor Fernandes’s legacy, as there are currently no memorials dedicated to him across the country.
