Drought Declaration Earlier Than Other States As A Precautionary Measure, Adequate Management: Minister

There is a severe drought situation in 17 states of the country. However, Minister Krishna Byre Gowda said that early drought has been declared only in Karnataka as a precautionary measure and the drought situation has been adequately managed.

The Minister informed about the state’s drought situation and the management of the government in the Legislative Council  on Wednesday, not only Karnataka,  neighboring Tamil Nadu and Kerala are also experiencing drought. Maharashtra also declared drought in November. However, as a precautionary measure, drought was declared in Karnataka in the month of September itself. Also, suitable measures were taken for drought management, he said.

In view of the drought situation in the state, money has been released to the district and taluk administrations by taking necessary measures to ensure that there is no drinking water problem in any village or city. There is now drinking water problem in 115 villages of the state.  Out of these 89 villages are being supplied with water through private tankers. There is a shortage of drinking water in four wards of the city and water is being supplied through tankers, he said.  Tahsildar should take immediate action to supply water within 24 hours considering this committee request.  To ensure that there is no shortage of funds, Rs. 50 lakh has already been suggested to be released, said Revenue Minister Krishna Byre Gowda in the House.
