Congress MPs Manickam Tagore and Manish Tewari submitted adjournment notices in the Lok Sabha, addressing the delay in the census exercise and the plight of eight former Indian Navy personnel on death row in Qatar, respectively.
Tagore emphasized the abnormal intentional delay in the census by the Central government, citing various reasons such as the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and amendments to Census Rules. He highlighted the adverse effects on policy-making, resource allocation, and overall national development due to the delay. Urging immediate discussion, Tagore emphasized the crucial role of timely census completion for accurate data collection and effective governance.
On the other hand, Tewari’s adjournment notice focused on discussing the imprisoned retired-Indian Navy personnel in Qatar. The personnel, including Captain Navtej Singh Gill and others, were sentenced on October 26, 2023. Tewari expressed concern over the lack of government response for 14 months, alleging brutal torture and self-incriminating confessions extracted during a questionable trial. He urged the government to inform the House about the situation, including charges, court rationale, and the steps taken to bring the Navy personnel back to India.
Both adjournment notices reflect the MPs’ concerns over significant issues impacting national governance, citizen well-being, and diplomatic matters. They seek urgent discussions to address these matters in the Lok Sabha.
