Former President Ram Nath Kovind will inaugurate the 32nd Foundation Day of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) on October 16, with a special focus on the rights and welfare of prison inmates, officials said on Tuesday. Kovind will deliver the inaugural address alongside NHRC Chairperson Justice V. Ramasubramanian and members Justice (Dr) Bidyut Ranjan Sarangi, Vijaya Bharathi Sayani, and Priyank Kanoongo.
As part of the celebration, a day-long National Conference on the “Human Rights of Prison Inmates” will be held. Sessions will discuss challenges faced by prisoners and ways to protect their rights. NHRC Secretary General Bharat Lal and other senior officers will also participate, reflecting on the Commission’s journey and renewing its commitment to human rights protection.
The event will host government officials, diplomats, academics, legal experts, and human rights defenders. Since 1993, NHRC has handled 23.79 lakh cases, driving reforms and recommending over ₹263 crore in relief.
NHRC has issued 31 advisories covering issues such as child sexual abuse, prisoners’ rights, welfare of transgender persons, environmental protection, and informal workers. Between October 2024 and September 2025, the Commission handled 73,849 complaints, 108 suo motu cases, conducted 63 spot enquiries, and recommended over Rs 9 crore in relief. Open Hearings and Camp Sittings in Odisha and Telangana helped sensitise officials and engage with local NGOs and media.
The Foundation Day celebrations will underline NHRC’s ongoing role in protecting human rights and strengthening justice mechanisms across India.
