UN Assistant Secretary-General Ligia Noronha emphasized the potential of India’s Mission Life, a mass movement promoting sustainable development, during a special event at the UN headquarters. Launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres last year, Mission Life aims to instigate lifestyle changes and individual/community actions against climate change.
Noronha highlighted Mission Life as an opportunity to leverage consumption for a better tomorrow by aligning with sustainable lifestyles. The initiative, in sync with the UN Sustainable Development Goals, received praise from India’s Permanent Representative Ruchira Kamboj, who noted its relevance during the COP28 Climate Summit addressing global warming.
Kamboj underscored the initiative’s significance in fostering a sustainable future, emphasizing individual responsibility as a catalyst for global change. The endorsement by Guterres was termed a powerful endorsement with the potential to inspire global movement towards sustainability practices.
Noronha, drawing attention to a survey, indicated a growing alignment of citizens with climate change and sustainability concerns. She proposed building Mission Life around a collective movement to address questions about consumption in harmony with nature, equitable norms, fairness, consumer value, and the unequal pattern of global consumption.
Mission Life, with its emphasis on individual choices and global collaboration, emerges as a crucial force in addressing environmental challenges, adding impetus to the broader mission of sustainable development and climate action.
