NITK Surathkal, a premier technical institution, along with improving its academic quality, is also adding a new infrastructure facility on campus.
The latest additions to campus infrastructure include a new hostel for boys and another for girls, each with about 200 rooms for triple or double occupancy. Other ongoing constructions include a lecture hall, an Olympic-size swimming pool, and an elevated sky track to safely connect the two sides of the campus.
KV Gangadharan, Dean (Planning and Development), said that currently the institution has a total of 14 hostels, including six designated for female students.
Soon, two more hostels, one for male students and another for female students, each capable of accommodating 200 individuals, will be added. This is because the government has plans to increase the intake of students in every government-funded education institution for undergraduate courses, and this expansion is in sync with the government’s plans, he said.
A sky track or a foot overbridge across National Highway-66, for a safe in-campus movement of the NITK community between the eastern and western sides was delayed by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI). It will be put to use in a month or two, said Gangadharan. With the toll booth situated about 12m away from the institute’s main entrance being removed, the vehicles moved at a high speed, and the sky track was essential for students’ safety.
