In a significant operation, the Baiyappanahalli Police in Bengaluru have dismantled a racket involved in determining the sex of fetuses and arrested four individuals. These culprits operated across Bengaluru, Mandya, and Mysuru, where they conducted fetal sex determination scans and facilitated abortions, particularly in cases involving female fetuses. Notably, one of the accused is believed to be a doctor who is currently evading arrest. The discovery of this illegal operation occurred during a routine vehicle check on Old Madras Road. While police officers were inspecting vehicles within their jurisdiction, they noticed a speeding car that failed to stop at barricades. In pursuit of the vehicle, the police managed to intercept it at NGF Signal. Upon questioning the occupants, it was revealed that the two individuals in the car were escorting a pregnant woman to terminate her pregnancy upon discovering the sex of the fetus. The police promptly apprehended four people involved in the operation: Shivalingegowda, Nayan Kumar, Veeresh, and Siddesh. Investigations have revealed that after conducting fetal sex determination tests at a laboratory in Mandya, the accused would then transport pregnant women to a clinic in Bengaluru, which was run by Veeresh’s uncle, where the abortions were performed. The police have charged the five accused under the Prohibition of Sex Selection Act, as well as under IPC sections 511 (Attempts to commit offenses punishable with imprisonment) and 312 (Voluntarily causing a woman with child to miscarry). Authorities are conducting further inquiries and cross-referencing details of women who sought abortions through this illegal network.
