The state government has launched Sasya Shyamala Yojane to inculcate environmental concern in children. The scheme, which was announced in the budget, has been implemented successfully in the district.
Under the programme launched by the department of school education and literacy, in association with the department of forest and environment, children are encouraged to plant and nurture saplings themselves.
Since the launch of the programme, around 12,000 saplings have been planted by children and school managements. The target set by the education department is to plant 18,075 saplings in government schools of the district. So far, the scheme has been getting good response in the district.
Under the scheme, the government plans to plant 50 lakh saplings in and around schools in the state over the next one year and nurture them. It has directed the schools to plant at least 50 saplings and to plant more if the situation permits.

Shivaleela N Kalasannavar, Assistant Project Coordinator of Rashtriya Madhyamik Shiksha Abhiyan and Nodal Officer of Sasya Shyamala Yojane said, we have identified 847 government schools in the district for the implementation of the programme. The education department has instructed us to plant the saplings in these schools before the rainy season ends. Schoolchildren have been asked to plant saplings and nurture them. However, groups of 2-3 children have been formed to plant and nurture the saplings during holidays. School teachers and children are actively involved in the plantation drive, she said.

DDPI Shanmuk Swamy Keladimath told   that the aim is to plant at least 50 saplings in each school under the scheme. The plantation drive is going on. This will also develop environmental concerns among children. In addition, the atmosphere of the school will also improve, the official said.
