Food and Civil Supplies, Consumer Affairs and Legal Metrology Minister KH Muniyappa has said that steps will be taken to fill up the vacant staff in the Legal Metrology Department at the earliest.
Addressing a press conference after reviewing the progress of the Legal Metrology Department at Vikasa Soudha on Wednesday, he said that out of the total 500 posts in the Legal Metrology Department, only 200 are working, another 300 posts are lying vacant. The vacant posts will be filled up within a month through KPSC or Karnataka Examination Authority. He said officers and staff in the department will be promoted as per rules.
The Minister said instructions have been given to take necessary steps to strengthen the Department, which is protecting the interest of consumers by maintaining accuracy in weights and measures in day-to-day business. He said that by providing all the facilities required by the department, the officers and staff of the department will work more effectively to provide justice to the public.
Rs 100 Crore revenue is being collected through the Legal Metrology Department. Replying to a media query, Muniyappa said the revenue collection target for the current year is Rs 500 Crore. In the meeting, I have instructed to collect approximately Rs 1,000 Crore revenue by taking strict action and protecting the interest of consumers by maintaining the weight and accuracy used in business and day-to-day business such as industries, petrol bunks, waybridges, star hotels, terminals, FCI, KFCSC, CWC, SWC, Airports, APMC, Jewellery shops, etc.
