Honolulu

Hawaii’s Kilauea volcano has erupted once again at its summit crater after a period of elevated seismic activity.

The US Geological Survey (USGS) raised the alert level to warning following the eruption, which began at 3:15 p.m. on Sunday, according to the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory (HVO). While there is no immediate danger to communities downhill from the eruption, authorities are closely monitoring the situation.

Lava is currently present along a lowered section of the caldera and the edge of Halemaumau crater. Officials emphasize that the eruption is dynamic and that hazards are being assessed. All activity remains confined to the Hawaiian Volcanoes National Park.

Webcam images captured fountains of lava shooting into the air during the eruption. Kilauea is one of the most active volcanoes on Earth and is the most active of the five volcanoes that make up the island of Hawaii.

The Hawaiian Volcanoes National Park has been monitoring the volcano closely, as Kilauea has a history of eruptions that have impacted local communities in the past. Scientists continue to assess the situation and provide updates as needed.
