A fresh spell of rain has triggered floods in Assam, affecting more than 1.90 lakh people across 17 districts. Tragically, there has been one reported fatality as a person fell into floodwaters and died in Sivasagar district’s Demow area on Monday, according to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA). The affected districts include Biswanath, Chirang, Darang, Dhemaji, Dhubri, Dibrugarh, Golaghat, Jorhat, Lakhimpur, Majuli, Morigaon, Nagaon, Nalbari, Sivasagar, Sonitpur, Tamulpur, and Udalguri. Approximately 522 villages in these districts are currently submerged under floodwaters, causing significant damage to around 8,000 hectares of crops. The ASDMA reported that a total of 1,90,675 people have been affected by the floods in the 17 districts. The state administrations in four districts are operating 47 relief camps and 45 relief distribution centers to provide assistance to those affected. Several major rivers, including the Brahmaputra, Subansiri, and Dikhou, have crossed the danger mark, leading to overflowing and posing threats to areas in Dibrugarh, Dhubri, Tezpur, Neamatighat, Badatighat, and Sivasagar. The floods have not only displaced human populations but have also adversely affected over 1.30 lakh domestic animals. Additionally, the situation has led to damages to roads in 18 different locations. Authorities are actively engaged in relief efforts to provide aid and support to those affected by the floods, with a focus on ensuring the safety and well-being of the affected individuals and communities.
