An aging government school building in Bellandur, over 90 years old, is posing a serious risk to the safety and well-being of its students. Cracks in the walls have raised concerns about the structural integrity of the building, while water leakage from the ceiling during heavy rains has forced students to evacuate the premises. The authorities’ appeals for assistance have reportedly gone unanswered, exacerbating the precarious situation. Bellandur Government Primary School accommodates more than 500 students across classes 1 to 7. However, the school faces numerous challenges, including a shortage of classrooms and a lack of a playground for the students. The current condition of the building is especially concerning, as cracks on the walls raise doubts about its stability. When rain pours heavily, water permeates through the ceiling, creating an environment where learning becomes impossible. Students have been forced to leave their classrooms whenever the weather takes a turn for the worse. The makeshift arrangements have seen teachers conducting classes in nearby spaces like car sheds or temple premises. The suboptimal conditions, coupled with the ongoing structural concerns, are impeding the educational experience of the young learners. With insufficient space and inadequate facilities, the students’ daily lives are affected, and their educational potential is hampered. The risk of the building’s deterioration poses a tangible threat to the safety of these children. Disturbed parents express apprehension about sending their children to a school with such evident structural problems. Srinivas, a concerned parent, articulated the collective sentiment, stating, “The school building is in very bad condition and looks like it can crumble at any moment. We are afraid to send our children to school.” The situation underscores the need for swift intervention from relevant authorities to address both the immediate safety concerns and the broader infrastructural deficits faced by the school.
