In a significant move to enhance road safety, the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) is poised to undertake the construction of skywalks at 24 key locations along the Bengaluru-Mysuru expressway, according to a report. The skywalk project, estimated to be completed within a year, comes in response to a surge in accidents on the expressway, which was inaugurated for traffic in March 2023. The NHAI’s proactive approach involves identifying accident-prone zones and hotspots along the expressway, with the intent to mitigate risks through the installation of skywalks. The project has already advanced considerably, with a Detailed Project Report (DPR) and a comprehensive blueprint in place. The anticipated expenditure for this endeavor stands at Rs 46.1 crore. Contractors selected for the project are expected to adhere to a one-year timeline for completion, alongside a subsequent five-year maintenance commitment for the constructed skywalks. These elevated pedestrian pathways will span an impressive 63 feet in length and offer a width of 3.5 meters. Crucially, three meters of this width will be designated for pedestrians, providing ample space for safe movement. The Bengaluru-Mysuru expressway has garnered attention due to a series of accidents, primarily resulting from pedestrians attempting to cross the busy thoroughfare. The decision to undertake the skywalk project reflects a dedicated effort to address this concerning trend and ensure the safety of road users. In a bid to curtail accidents, local authorities had previously implemented speed restrictions, limiting vehicles to 100kmph and prohibiting the entry of bikes, tractors, and slow-moving vehicles onto the expressway. These measures have contributed to a reduction in the number of accidents reported along the route. As the NHAI embarks on this ambitious initiative, it underscores the pivotal role of infrastructure in safeguarding lives and fostering safer transportation networks.
