The United Naga Council (UNC) in Manipur has expressed strong concerns regarding the accusations and statements made by the Kuki-Zo community, claiming that they are spreading distorted history and fabricated information related to the Nagas and their land. The UNC’s statement highlights that such actions contribute to the distortion of Naga history and an insult to the Naga people. The UNC raises questions about the credibility and accuracy of the claims made by the Kuki-Zo community, particularly in relation to establishing new villages in Kuki areas within Naga districts. They perceive this as an attempt to rewrite history for the sake of creating enmity between the two communities. Additionally, the UNC criticizes the Congress government’s decision to create new districts in 2016, viewing these actions as part of an appeasement policy that disregards the Nagas’ concerns and opposition. The emerging conflicts between the Naga and Kuki communities are causing concern among sociologists and government sources, considering their historical clash in the 1990s. The ongoing tensions between Meiteis and Kukis had not previously involved Nagas, who have a significant presence in Manipur. On the other hand, the Kuki Inpi Manipur, an influential Kuki body, has accused the Meitei leadership and organizations of spreading falsehoods about the Kuki community. They highlight instances of alleged fabrication of facts and narratives by certain groups, despite the undeniable Indianness of the Kukis. The situation is complex and multi-faceted, with historical, socio-political, and ethnic factors playing a role in the tensions between various communities in the region.
