After several requests to the elected representatives and Hubli-Dharwad Municipal Corporation (HDMC)  for the development of a park, the residents of Lotimath Layout have come together to develop a green space on their own.
The residents have already spent Rs 1 lakh on levelling the ground and are planning to complete the work without the support of HDMC. They have also scheduled a tree plantation drive.
According to sources, Lotimath Layout is located about 2 km from the centre of the city. The area was formed about 20 years ago. Nearly 100 residences and 1,500 people living in this area are now facing a lack of basic facilities. There are many electricity poles which do not function properly. There is no drainage system in this area. Many senior citizens who cannot step outside during night hours have urged to solve these problems immediately, said Gajanna Pawar, a member of the Lotimath Layout Owners Development Association told.
He said residents have been demanding to clean the park and construct a community hall. But neither the corporation officials nor the elected representatives have paid attention. Due to wilderness in empty spaces and no proper lights on streets, residents are to scared step outside after evening hours in the area. He said that after many requests to HDMC and elected representatives to develop the park, some officials and the local corporator visited the site and assured them of development but no action has been taken to date.
However, we are spending money from our own pockets to develop the park. We have already spent Rs1 lakh and still require Rs 2 lakh. Some organisations have assured to donate money for this project. The park’s layout work is going on, Pawar added
