17-Year-Old Boy Dies On Way To Hospital After Surgery, DSS Protests Against Neglect

Puttur police have registered a case pertaining to the death of a boy on August 14.

A young boy who complained of stomach ache was brought to a private hospital here for treatment where he also underwent a surgery. While he was being shifted to a hospital in Mangaluru for further treatment the boy breathed his last on the way as he did not respond to the treatment provided at the hospital.

On August 12 in the night, Srijith was admitted to a private hospital near the old taluk office of Puttur after he had complained of stomach ache.

The duty doctor examined him and admitted him as an in-patient. On August 13 in the morning, the doctors who examined Srijith directed that he be operated on. Srijith underwent the operation at 6 pm and was later shifted to the ICU and then to the ward where they informed the Srijith’s family about surgery before going ahead with other treatment.

The doctors said the hospital does not possess the right equipment to nurse the boy. Srijith was told to be taken to Mangaluru. Srijith’s family members took him in an ambulance to a private hospital in Mangaluru where the doctors examined him and declared him dead, as per the complaint filed by Srijith’s uncle Krishna with the Puttur Town Police where a case has been registered.

Meanwhile, members of the Dalit Sangharsha Samithi   staged a dharna in front of the private hospital in Puttur alleging that the hospital’s negligence had led to the death of the young boy.

Tahsildar G Shivashankar who paid a visit to the spot met the protesters and accepted a memorandum submitted by them besides trying to mollify them. Later, they withdrew their protest.
