The much-awaited Vijayapura airport project has entered its final phase, with efforts underway to commence flight operations by January 2027, Karnataka State Industrial and Infrastructure Development Corporation (KSIIDC) Chairman S.G. Nanjayyanamath said.
After inspecting the ongoing airport works on Friday, Nanjayyanamath told reporters that the project had faced delays due to the absence of environmental clearance and a Supreme Court stay order. He said the stay had been lifted about three weeks ago and the state government had now sought the required approval from the Central Environment Department. Although the ongoing Parliament session could cause some delay, approval is expected soon, he said.
Night-flight arrangements are progressing, while the tender process is expected to be completed within a week. Land acquisition required for night landing facilities is also underway. Nanjayyanamath expressed confidence that flight operations could begin in January, subject to final technical approvals from the concerned authorities.
The airport is being developed at an estimated cost of Rs 618.75 crore, with infrastructure planned to accommodate Airbus A320-type aircraft. Package-1 includes the runway, taxiway, apron, isolation bay, internal and peripheral roads and other pavement works. Package-2 covers the passenger terminal, ATC tower, security buildings, fire station, parking facilities, water systems, solar panels and other essential infrastructure.
The state government has also approved Rs 65 crore for facilities required for night operations and Rs 52 crore for a four-lane connecting road from NH-50 to the airport. Land acquisition for both works is progressing.
Officials said the remaining works and statutory approvals would be expedited to make the airport operational as early as possible.
