225.770 MT waste cleared in a single day in Mysuru

As part of the “Independence Day Cleanliness Campaign–2026: 80 Waste-Free Sites” initiative launched by the Mysuru City Corporation (MCC) to mark the 80th Independence Day, a massive GVP (Garbage Vulnerable Point) cleaning and transformation drive was undertaken across different parts of the city on Tuesday.
A total of 225.770 metric tonnes of waste was cleared in the operation, according to MCC Commissioner M.K.Savitha.
The main GVP transformation programme was conducted near the Gokulam Crematorium in Zone–4, where Mysuru Regional Commissioner Nitesh Patil and MCC Commissioner participated and formally launched the cleanliness operation.
A massive 149.770 metric tonnes of waste was removed from the GVP near the Gokulam Crematorium. This included approximately 130 metric tonnes of construction and demolition (C&D) waste and 19.770 metric tonnes of other solid waste.
Meanwhile, a GVP cleaning operation was taken up near Bandikeri KHPT in Zone–1, where K.R. Assembly constituency MLA T.S. Srivatsa participated. So far, 69 metric tonnes of waste have been cleared from the site, while cleaning and transformation works are still in progress. The final quantity of waste removed will be recorded after completion of the operation.
Under the same campaign, 2 metric tonnes of waste were removed from an identified GVP location in Zone–5; 1 metric tonne was cleared from the GVP near the Regional Commissioner’s residence on Valmiki Road in Zone–6; and a total of 4 metric tonnes was removed from GVP locations opposite Rahmath Nursing Home in Rajiv Nagar and opposite R.K. Palace on Sathy Nagar Main Road in Udayagiri, both in Zone–8.

The operation involved MCC Superintending Engineers, Deputy Commissioner (Revenue), Executive Engineers, Zonal Assistant Commissioners, Development Officers, Assistant Executive Engineers, Environmental Engineers, Health Inspectors, supervisors, pourakarmikas, vehicle drivers and other officers and staff.
The waste cleared during the operation was transported through MCC vehicles to designated processing and disposal facilities. To prevent the cleaned GVP locations from becoming dumping spots again, the MCC is undertaking beautification works, installing awareness and warning boards, and conducting public awareness programmes.
Each transformed site will be continuously monitored for a minimum period of 30 days to ensure that it remains clean and free from illegal dumping.
Under the “Independence Day Cleanliness Campaign–2026: 80 Waste-Free Sites” programme, the MCC has identified 80 GVP locations across nine zones of Mysuru and has set a target of clearing and permanently transforming all these sites by August 30.
The Commissioner appealed to local residents, elected representatives, organisations, traders and volunteers to actively participate in the campaign and help make the transformation sustainable.
The public has been urged to segregate waste at source and hand it over only to the MCC’s authorised waste collection vehicles.
The Commissioner warned that strict action would be taken and penalties imposed under the applicable rules against those who illegally dump waste, construction and demolition debris or other garbage again at the transformed locations.
