Getting your daily milk packet is about to get a bit costlier in Maharashtra. Milk prices across the state will rise by two rupees per litre for both cow and buffalo milk starting August 11. The Milk Producers and Processors Welfare Association announced this retail rate revision, which will add a fresh burden to household budgets.
Dairy processors and producers defended the decision due to climbing operational expenses. They explained that higher costs for procuring and processing milk have made this price adjustment completely necessary to keep dairy businesses running smoothly.
This change follows a recent update from the central government regarding dairy pricing. Officials clarified in the Lok Sabha last month that there are no active plans to introduce a Minimum Support Price for milk. Fisheries and Dairy Minister Rajiv Ranjan Singh stated that rates will remain completely market-driven, relying on cooperatives and private dairies instead of government price controls.
Even without an MSP system, the government maintains that it is taking heavy steps to protect both farmers and buyers. Officials are focusing on expanding infrastructure and bringing more local producers into the organized dairy sector. Recent reports show thousands of new village-level cooperative societies have been successfully established and strengthened nationwide.
Furthermore, the government has boosted national processing capabilities, expanding chilling capacity and distributing testing equipment to check milk quality. India has witnessed massive growth in overall dairy output over the past decade, with production jumping significantly. Despite this national progress, everyday buyers in Maharashtra will now have to pay slightly higher prices at local stores.
