Sources noted it is wrong to say authorities asked Meta to completely change its algorithms. Instead, the goal is to fix content governance and enforcement mechanisms. A major issue is that teams sitting outside India lack a deep understanding of local languages and cultural nuances. Officials stressed that Meta needs stronger local expertise to make accurate moderation choices.
The government also took a strict stand on Child Sexual Abuse Material. Officials emphasized there is zero tolerance for such illegal data, and Meta must take active steps rather than just giving empty promises.
Deepfakes were another key topic of discussion. The government warned that automated systems should not wrongly tag posts from verified accounts as deepfakes. Officials suggested using a human review process for sensitive cases before taking any action. Furthermore, authorities questioned why deleted deepfakes keep popping up again. Meta has been asked to explain how it stops such content from returning. Both sides plan to hold more technical meetings soon to ensure proper compliance and safety measures.
