Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Friday reaffirmed the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government’s commitment to upholding the ideals and aspirations of the freedom fighters who sacrificed their lives to liberate India from British colonial rule.
Addressing a state-level function organised in Sunam to mark the 87th martyrdom day of Shaheed Udham Singh, the Chief Minister paid glowing tributes to the legendary revolutionary, describing his patriotism and supreme sacrifice as a timeless source of inspiration for future generations. Mann said the nation would always remain indebted to the iconic martyr for his unmatched courage and unwavering commitment to justice.
Earlier in the day, the Chief Minister offered floral tributes and laid a wreath at the memorial dedicated to Shaheed Udham Singh, remembering his extraordinary contribution to India’s freedom struggle.
Speaking on the occasion, Mann said Shaheed Udham Singh’s sacrifice symbolised the determination of countless freedom fighters who laid down their lives to secure independence and build a just and egalitarian society committed to the welfare of the poor and underprivileged.
Recalling the historic significance of Udham Singh’s actions, the Chief Minister said the revolutionary avenged the Jallianwala Bagh massacre by assassinating Michael O’Dwyer at London’s Caxton Hall. He noted that O’Dwyer, the then Lieutenant Governor of Punjab, had been responsible for the administration under which hundreds of innocent and unarmed Indians were brutally gunned down at Jallianwala Bagh.
Mann said commemorating the martyrdom day of Shaheed Udham Singh was an opportunity to express the nation’s deepest gratitude to one of its bravest sons, whose sacrifice continues to inspire citizens to serve the country with courage, patriotism and selfless dedication.
