The Vijayapur Airport project has received a major boost after the Supreme Court removed environmental clearance-related hurdles. Infrastructure Development Minister M.B. Patil said the airport could begin operations within three months if the required approvals are completed on time.

A three-judge bench of the Supreme Court delivered the final verdict, clearing the way for further procedures related to environmental permissions. Patil welcomed the decision and thanked the legal team, including Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, senior advocate Kapil Sibal and other government representatives who supported the state’s case.

The minister explained that environmental clearance is mandatory for public interest projects and the airport project had faced delays due to earlier court directions. He said the latest order has provided relief and allowed the authorities to continue the approval process.

Following the verdict, the Union Environment Ministry will examine applications seeking environmental clearance for the airport. After receiving approval, the Director General of Civil Aviation will inspect the completed works at the airport before operations begin.

Patil said the Supreme Court had earlier provided temporary relief to projects awaiting clearance while conducting a detailed review. The latest judgment has now given permanent relief, allowing the Vijayapur Airport project to move forward.

The airport construction has received an investment of more than Rs 614 crore. Once operational, the facility is expected to improve connectivity and support economic development in Kittur Karnataka and nearby regions. The government hopes the airport will provide better travel opportunities and strengthen growth in the area.

M B Patil raises concern over Cauvery Water release

Karnataka Minister M B Patil said releasing 4.50 TMC of Cauvery water to Tamil Nadu is difficult due to poor rainfall and low water storage in the state’s reservoirs. Speaking to reporters, he said water sharing becomes easier during good monsoon years, but drought creates challenges. Patil highlighted the need for the Mekedatu reservoir project, saying it can help store water and benefit both Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. He added that Chief Minister D K Shivakumar, Water Resources Minister Ramalinga Reddy, and central officials should review the situation and find a suitable solution.
