Legislative Council Chairman Basavaraj S. Horatti called upon women students to acquire practical skills along with formal education, stating that skill development was essential for success in the modern competitive world.
He was speaking after inaugurating the newly constructed Decennial Building and participating in the Foundation Day celebrations at Karnataka State Akkamahadevi Women’s University on the outskirts of Vijayapura.
Horatti said women played a crucial role in the development of the country and should equip themselves with diverse skills in addition to becoming educated. He encouraged students to develop innovative thinking and strive for excellence in their chosen fields.

He said knowledge, education and self-confidence could help women reach higher positions in life. Recalling the establishment of India’s first science academy in Karnataka and its inauguration by former President Dr A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, Horatti highlighted Karnataka’s significant contribution to education and research.
He noted that women could achieve major success even through small enterprises. Citing the example of a childhood friend who became a successful entrepreneur by providing tailoring training to women, he urged students to overcome the belief that they were incapable of achieving their goals.
“Women are not confined to the kitchen. They are making their presence felt in the judiciary, police, healthcare, education, administration and several other sectors,” he said. He urged students to make effective use of the opportunities available to them and move forward with confidence.
He also appreciated Horatti’s contribution towards securing grants for several unaided schools in Karnataka and encouraged students to pursue quality education and aspire to become senior officers.
Former Vice-Chancellor of Karnataka State Open University, Mysuru, Prof. S.V. Halase, who attended as the chief guest, said Akkamahadevi Women’s University had emerged as an important gateway to higher education for women students in North Karnataka.
He stressed that women students should give greater importance to skill development alongside academic education to showcase their talents in different fields. Skill-based education, he said, had become a key factor for success in today’s competitive environment.
Vice-Chancellor Prof. Vijaya B. Korishetty outlined the university’s academic progress, infrastructure development and initiatives undertaken for the educational empowerment of women students since its establishment.
Legislative Council member Hanumant Nirani, Registrar (Evaluation) Prof. B.L. Lakkannavar, Registrar Shankargouda D. Somanal, Finance Officer Ramannagouda Athani, faculty members and students were present.

Who presided over the programme, women had equal opportunities in the country and should utilise them to contribute to social development. He said it was a matter of pride that women faculty members constituted the entire teaching staff in his educational institutions.
